The rules

How a round works

A round is five clues and five pins. There is no clock on the daily expedition, so the game is about reading the clue carefully rather than typing quickly.

Read the full rules
  1. 01

    Read the clue

Each clue describes a country, not a point on the map. “A country where German is an official language” accepts every country where that is true.

  2. 02

    Choose a country

Click a country on the chart or pick one from the list. The name appears under the map before you commit, so you can move the pin.

  3. 03

    Drop the pin

One answer per clue. The game checks the country against the answer list and shows the tier it earned.

  4. 04

    Keep the rarity in mind

Germany is Common for the German clue. Luxembourg is Farflung. Both are correct; only one adds 100 km.

  5. 05

    Reach camp

After the fifth pin, camp shows your total distance, every accepted answer and a short fact about each country.

The score

Rarity levels

Every accepted country carries one of five tiers. The tier sets the distance the answer adds, from 40 km to 100 km. The values below are the same object the game reads at runtime.

Rarity and scoring explained
Farflung rarity tiers, their distance in kilometres and what each tier means
TierDistanceWhat it means
Common40 kmThe answer most players reach for first.
Uncommon55 kmA second thought, and a better one.
Rare70 kmA country that takes a little digging.
Elusive85 kmThe answer that makes people look twice.
Farflung100 kmThe gem. The answer almost nobody names.

A gem is the least obvious accepted answer in a clue. It is usually the Farflung tier, and every prompt has at least one.

Questions

Farflung FAQ

The short answers about the daily game, the archive and the fan site status.

Is there a new Farflung expedition every day?
Yes. A new expedition with five clues opens at midnight in your local time. The daily round has no timer, so you can finish it whenever you like.
Can I play old Farflung expeditions?
Yes. Every published expedition stays in the archive with its hints, answers, rarity breakdown and a short country fact for each answer.
Is this the official Farflung?
No. Guessingame is an unofficial fan site and is not affiliated with Farflung LLC. The official game is at farflung.game.
Is Farflung free?
Yes. The daily expedition, unlimited practice and the full archive are free in your browser. There is no account, download or paid plan.
How is the score calculated?
Each correct country adds the distance for its rarity, from 40 km for Common to 100 km for Farflung. A wrong answer adds nothing. Five perfect gems would score 500 km.
